A low headline fee is not always cheaper. Some quotes leave out items that later appear as extras, such as site visits, the schedule of condition or changes to the award. Compare what is included, not only the first figure.
Where hidden costs come from
Most party wall surveyors are honest, but quotes vary in what they cover. A fee that looks small may assume the neighbour consents without fuss, which is not something anyone can guarantee.

Signs of a risky quote
Be careful if a surveyor will not put terms in writing, cannot explain their fee basis, or is vague about extras. Check any claimed professional membership on the body's own site. Membership alone does not guarantee quality.
The cost of poor work
A weak award or missing record can leave you exposed to a damage claim or a challenge later. Correcting mistakes, issuing a fresh notice or defending a claim can cost more than the original fee.
What to do
Get at least two written quotes. Ask each surveyor to list what is included and what is extra. Keep a copy of the appointment terms.
Cheap can also mean thinly resourced. A surveyor with too many cases may be slow to respond, which delays your builder. Ask how quickly they normally reply, and who covers if they are unavailable. Delay has a cost of its own.
